Resin coatings versus microcement
What are resin coating and microcement?
Resin coating is a synthetic resin-based coating that forms a waterproof, yet breathable, seamless surface. Resin coatings are well suited for wet room surfaces because they repel water, dirt and grease effectively.
Microcement is a cement-based coating that is applied in thin layers and provides a concrete-like, matte finish. It is a popular aesthetic option, but as a cement-based formulation it is not fully waterproof without additional protection.
The resin coating is more waterproof and easier to maintain
One of the major advantages of a resin coating is that it is itself completely waterproof, yet breathable, meaning it prevents water and liquids from being absorbed into structures, but does not form a water trap where any moisture underneath cannot escape. This makes the resin coating very hygienic and easy to keep clean, as no structures that collect liquids or dirt remain on the surface.
Microcement, on the other hand, has small pores through which water and dirt can be absorbed unless the surface is sealed or protected with the right protective agent. This can make cleaning more difficult, especially in damp areas such as showers and bathrooms.
But how can something be waterproof and yet breathable? Because liquid water and water vapour are different things. Resin-coated materials react optimally, keeping liquid water out, but allowing water vapour to escape from the structure where it is coated.
Durability and longevity
The resin coating is a highly wear-resistant and elastic material that resists shocks, abrasion and continuous use. It is also suitable for areas where the coating is frequently exposed to moisture, chemicals or heavy wear.
Microcement is also a durable material, but as a cement-based material it may be more susceptible to mechanical damage and cracking, for example, if the substrate is not completely flat or if the installation is not done correctly. In addition, microcement often requires additional sealing or a protective agent to be fully waterproof.
Easy maintenance and cleanability
The non-porous surface of the resin coating is easy to clean and maintain without the need for special cleaning agents. Often a simple damp wipe is all that is needed to keep the surface clean.
Microcement maintenance can be more challenging, especially without additional protection, as pores can collect dirt and water, requiring more regular maintenance and reapplication of protective materials.
Installation quality and risks
The surface achieved with a resin coating is smooth and seamless, with no pores or gaps when the installation is done carefully. This makes the surface reliable and long-lasting.
Microcement can be visually appealing, but its correct application requires very careful groundwork and expert installation. Small imperfections can show on the surface, and the waterproofing of microcement often depends on the correct application of the protective material.
Where a resin coating is clearly better
A resin coating is usually a clearly better choice in areas where a coating is needed:
- Waterproof without additional treatments, but still breathable surface material
- Available certified for various applications, also CE certified
- Easy to clean and hygienic surface
- Hard-wearing and durable coating
- Seamless and smooth finish, especially in damp areas
- Allows easy effect walls and decorative coatings on a wide range of surfaces

Summary
In many applications, resin coating is a better choice than microcement because it is waterproof, breathable, easy to clean, durable and hygienic. Microcement can provide a certain aesthetic appearance, but it is not as versatile in itself and requires more maintenance than resin coating unless it is treated. Resin coatings are also extensively certified for a wide range of construction projects, so they are a safe choice.
